I Tried It: Kayaking the Hudson River in NYC

I’ve been living the daily grind in and around New York City for quite a few years now and I can honestly say this city still never ceases to amaze me. It can be overwhelming and obnoxious at times, but it also offers endless opportunities to learn, grow and have fun. From beauty workshops to quirky exercise classes, I’m rarely at a loss for things to do.

This week has been no exception. The other day I went on a company outing to kayak on the Hudson River! I love to kayak and stand up paddleboard, but I never imagined myself doing it on one of the busiest waterways in NYC. To be honest, the idea sort of freaked me out… have you SEEN the size of those boats out there?

Our kayak session began at the Manhattan Kayak Company located next to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Our guide, Louanne, gave us a 10 minute instructional crash course, loaded us into our kayaks and we set out on our 45-minute voyage. We followed Louanne out of the protected embayment and towards the middle of the Hudson River. From there, we were treated to an insane view of Manhattan’s incredible skyline.

Despite my initial fears, we didn’t encounter too many boats and the water was relatively calm. Overall, our little kayak adventure was a really awesome experience and something I’d highly suggest to both NYC dwellers and tourists alike.
