What I Learned After 30 Days of Meditation

Meditation is slowly transforming my life. When I started on this journey, I really didn’t know what to expect. I’ve read a lot about the positive changes other people had experienced from meditating, but I wasn’t sure if I’d be echoing the same sentiments. I completed the first 30 days of the Headspace guided meditation app and all I can say is, “Wow.”  Each meditation session brought a renewed sense of purpose and awakening to my life. Here are a few things I’ve learned after my first 30 days.

Look up. Be Aware. Be Present.

1. Look Up More Often

Meditation has given me a greater awareness of my surroundings.  As an urbanite in NYC, keeping your head down and fast-walking with a purpose can be a means of survival in the urban jungle. It can also send your body and mind into a stressful state of “fight or flight.” Meditation has taught me to slow down and be present. Instead of being overwhelmed by the hustle of the city, I make an effort to look around and appreciate my surroundings.

2. Stop Worrying So Much

Meditation focuses on staying in the present moment. The more you learn to live in the present, the less time you spend worrying about the future (or past). Meditation has also given me greater clarity of mind in regards to recognizing the things I have control over and the things I don’t.

3. Be Compassionate

Compassion and patience aren’t the easiest traits to stay mindful about when you’re in a rush or having a rough day. On the other hand, getting wrapped up in selfishness usually only exacerbates a bad mood (pity party, anyone?). Little by little, meditation has taught me to step outside myself, recognize other’s suffering and be more kind. In return, it all comes full circle and leads back to me showing more compassion towards myself too. Win/win!

Have you been practicing meditation? I’d love to hear your personal changes and success stories!
